Sight Words
What are sight words and why are they so important for students to know? Sight words are commonly used words within text that cannot be sounded out such as: in, to, is, of, the, that, this. These words make up about half of the words within text. Sight words are important to know because they occur so often within text, can't be sounded out, and using picture cues to word solve won't help. Once children have solid recalling these words on sight they an focus on using reading strategies to decode less commonly seen words to make sense of the text.
